✧ The first day I came to know 'Abd al-Rahman b. Abi Layla, I saw an old man with a white head and beard on a donkey, and he was following a funeral procession. I heard him say: So-and-so, son of so-and-so, narrated to me that he heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: 'Whoever loves to meet God, God loves to meet him; and whoever hates to meet God, God hates to meet him.' He said: The people turned away crying. He said: 'What makes you cry?' They said: 'We hate death.' He said: 'It is not that, but when death approaches—if he is among the ones brought near, then rest and fragrance and a garden of bliss. And when he is given glad tidings of that, he loves to meet God, and God is more loving of meeting him. But if he is among the deniers and the lost, then hospitality of boiling water—'Ata' said: 'And in the reading of Ibn Mas'ud: then burning in a blazing fire—then when he is given tidings of that, he hates to meet God, and God is more hating of meeting him.'
