  2. Saʿīd / Ibn Abū ʿArūbah
  3. Qatādah
  4. Shahr b. Ḥawshab
  5. ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Ghanm
  6. ʿAmraw b. Khārijah al-Khushanī

✧ The Prophet ﷺ gave them a sermon on his mount, and his mount was chewing her cud, and her saliva was flowing between my shoulders. He said: "Indeed God [Mighty and Majestic] has apportioned to every person his share of inheritance, so a bequest to an heir is not permissible. The child belongs to the bed, and for the adulterer is the stone. Indeed, whoever claims descent from other than his father, or takes as patrons other than his patrons, upon him is the curse of God, the angels, and all people; God will not accept from him any optional or obligatory deed"—or "obligatory or optional deed."

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Abū Ḥatim al-Rāzī

machine translationWhich of the two is more sound (aṣaḥḥ)? He said: "From ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ghanm is more sound (aṣaḥḥ)."

    in مسند أحمد, p. 18305
  • Shafiʿī

machine translationAl-Shāfiʿī inclined in al-Umm to the view that this text is mass-transmitted (mutawātir), and said: "We found the people of legal rulings, and those of the people of knowledge of the military expeditions (maghāzī) among Quraysh and others whom we have memorized from, not disagreeing that the Prophet ﷺ said in the year of the Conquest: 'There is no bequest for an heir.' And they transmit it from those of the people of knowledge whom they met and from whom they memorized it. So it is a transmission of the many from the many, and it is stronger than the transmission of a single person."

    in مسند أحمد, p. 18305

machine translationAl-Fakhr al-Rāzī disputed that this hadith is mass-transmitted (mutawātir).

    in مسند أحمد, p. 18305
  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationThe chain of each of them is not free of criticism, but their totality indicates that the hadith has a basis.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 18305
