✧ I was a merchant, and I came for Hajj. I went to al-Abbas b. Abd al-Muttalib to buy some merchandise from him, for he was also a merchant. By Allah, while I was with him at Mina, a man came out of a tent nearby. He looked at the sun, and when he saw that it had declined—meaning—he stood to pray. He said: Then a woman came out of the same tent from which that man had emerged and stood behind him to pray. Then a boy who was nearing puberty came out of that tent and stood with him to pray. He said: I asked al-Abbas, “Who is this, Abbas?” He replied, “This is Muhammad b. Abdullah b. Abd al-Muttalib, my nephew.” I asked, “Who is this woman?” He replied, “This is his wife, Khadijah bt. Khuwaylid.” I asked, “Who is this young man?” He replied, “This is Ali b. Abi Talib, his cousin.” I then asked, “What is he doing?” He replied, “He is praying and claims that he is a prophet. No one has followed him in his cause except his wife and his cousin, this young man. He also claims that the treasures of Khosrow and Caesar will be opened to him.” Afif, who was a cousin of al-Ashath b. Qays, later accepted Islam and became a good Muslim. He would say, “If only Allah had granted me Islam that day, so that I might have been a third alongside Ali b. Abi Talib.”
