Amr b. al-As from the Prophet ﷺ

حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبِي يَقُولُ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو قَيْسٍ مَوْلَى عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ

أَنَّ عَمْرَو بْنَ الْعَاصِ كَانَ يَسْرُدُ الصَّوْمَ، وَقَلَّمَا كَانَ يُصِيبُ مِنَ الْعَشَاءِ أَوَّلَ اللَّيْلِ، أَكْثَرَ مَا كَانَ يُصِيبُ مِنَ السَّحَرِ، قَالَ: وَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: « إِنَّ فَصْلًا بَيْنَ صِيَامِنَا وَصِيَامِ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ أَكْلَةُ السَّحَرِ ».

✧ ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ used to observe continuous fasting, and he would rarely have his evening meal at the beginning of the night; most often he would have it at the pre-dawn time. He said: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: “Indeed, the distinction between our fasting and the fasting of the People of the Book is the pre-dawn meal (al-saḥar).”
