حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ عَنْ الْمُرَقَّعِ بْنِ صَيْفِيِّ عَنْ حَنْظَلَةَ الْكَاتِبِ قَالَ
غَزَوْنَا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، فَمَرَرْنَا عَلَى امْرَأَةٍ مَقْتُولَةٍ، وَقَدِ اجْتَمَعَ عَلَيْهَا النَّاسُ قَالَ: فَأَفْرَجُوا لَهُ، فَقَالَ: « مَا كَانَتْ هَذِهِ تُقَاتِلُ » ثُمَّ قَالَ لِرَجُلٍ: « انْطَلِقْ إِلَى خَالِدِ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ فَقُلْ لَهُ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ [ ﷺ ] يَأْمُرُكَ أَنْ لَا تَقْتُلَ ذُرِّيَّةً وَلَا عَسِيفًا

✧ We went on a campaign with the Prophet ﷺ, and we passed by a slain woman with people gathered around her. He said, "Make way for him." Then he said, "She was not one to fight." He then said to a man, "Go to Khalid b. al-Walid and tell him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commands you not to kill children or laborers."

machine translationThis is a mistake. It is said that this is an error (wahm) of al-Thawrī. Rather, it is al-Muraqqiʿ b. Ṣayfī, from the grandmother of Rabāḥ b. al-Rabīʿ, the brother of Ḥanẓalah, from the Prophet ﷺ. This is how it is narrated by Mughīrah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, Ziyād b. Saʿd and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī al-Zinād. My father said: and this is the correct one.
