✧ Rabi'ah b. al-Harith and Abbas b. Abdul-Muttalib met and said: By Allah, if we sent these two boys—meaning me and al-Fadl b. Abbas—to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he appointed them over these sadaqat, they would deliver what people deliver and obtain what people obtain of benefit. While they were in that, Ali b. Abi Talib came and said: What do you two want? They told him what they wanted. He said: Do not do it, for by Allah, he will not do it. They said: Why do you say this? This is nothing from you but envy toward us. You have accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and obtained his kinship by marriage, and we did not envy you for that. He said: I am Abu Hasan, send them. Then he lay down. He said: When he prayed Zuhr, we preceded him to the room and stood by it until he passed by us. He took us by the hands and said: "Bring out what you are hiding," and he entered, and we entered with him, and he was then in the house of Zaynab bt. Jahsh. He said: We spoke to him, saying: O Messenger of Allah, we have come to you so that you may appoint us over these sadaqat, so that we may obtain what people obtain of benefit and deliver to you what people deliver. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ fell silent and raised his head to the ceiling of the house until we wanted to speak to him again. He said: Zaynab gestured to us from behind her screen as if she was forbidding us from speaking to him, and he turned and said: "Indeed, sadaqah is not appropriate for Muhammad nor for the family of Muhammad; it is only the filth of people. Summon for me Mahmiyah b. Jaz'—and he was over the tithes—and Abu Sufyan b. al-Harith." They came, and he said to Mahmiyah: "Give them as dowry from the khums."
