✧ ʿUqbah said: We used to serve ourselves, and we would take turns tending the camels among ourselves. It fell to me to tend the camels, so I brought them back in the evening and caught up with the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was standing, speaking to the people. I caught from his speech while he was saying: 'None of you performs ablution and does it thoroughly, then stands and prays two rakʿahs, turning to them with his heart and his face, except that Paradise becomes guaranteed for him and he is forgiven.' He said: So I said, 'How excellent this is!' He said: Then a speaker in front of me said, 'The one that came before it, O ʿUqbah, is even more excellent.' So I looked, and it was ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb. He said: I said, 'What is it, O Abū Ḥafṣ?' He said: 'Before you arrived, he said: None of you performs ablution and does it thoroughly, then says: I bear witness that there is no god but God, alone with no partner, and that Muḥammad is His servant and His messenger, except that the eight gates of Paradise are opened for him, and he enters from whichever of them he wishes.'
