حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ وَزَيْدَ بْنَ خَالِدٍ الْجُهَنِيَّ وَشَبْلًا قَالَ سُفْيَانُ قَالَ

كُنَّا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ: أَنْشُدُكَ اللهَ، إِلَّا قَضَيْتَ بَيْنَنَا بِكِتَابِ اللهِ، فَقَامَ خَصْمُهُ وَكَانَ أَفْقَهَ مِنْهُ، فَقَالَ: صَدَقَ، اقْضِ بَيْنَنَا بِكِتَابِ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ، وَأْذَنْ لِي فَأَتَكَلَّمَ. قَالَ: قُلْ، قَالَ: إِنَّ ابْنِي كَانَ عَسِيفًا عَلَى هَذَا، وَإِنَّهُ زَنَى بِامْرَأَتِهِ، فَافْتَدَيْتُ مِنْهُ بِمِائَةِ شَاةٍ وَخَادِمٍ، ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُ رِجَالًا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ، فَأَخْبَرُونِي أَنَّ عَلَى ابْنِي جَلْدَ مِائَةٍ وَتَغْرِيبَ عَامٍ، وَعَلَى امْرَأَةِ هَذَا الرَّجْمَ. فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَأَقْضِيَنَّ بَيْنَكُمَا بِكِتَابِ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ، الْمِائَةُ شَاةٍ وَالْخَادِمُ رَدٌّ عَلَيْكَ، وَعَلَى ابْنِكَ جَلْدُ مِائَةٍ، وَتَغْرِيبُ عَامٍ، وَاغْدُ يَا أُنَيْسُ - رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَسْلَمَ - عَلَى امْرَأَةِ هَذَا، فَإِنِ اعْتَرَفَتْ فَارْجُمْهَا. فَغَدَا عَلَيْهَا، فَاعْتَرَفَتْ، فَرَجَمَهَا

✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a man stood up and said: I adjure you by Allah to judge between us according to the Book of Allah. His opponent stood up, and he was more knowledgeable than him, and said: He has spoken the truth. Judge between us according to the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and allow me to speak. He said: Speak. He said: My son was a hired worker for this man, and he committed adultery with his wife. I ransomed him with one hundred sheep and a servant. Then I asked some men of knowledge, and they told me that my son must be flogged one hundred lashes and exiled for a year, and that this man's wife must be stoned. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: By the One in whose hand is my soul, I will surely judge between you according to the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. The hundred sheep and the servant are to be returned to you. Your son must be flogged one hundred lashes and exiled for a year. O Unays—a man from Aslam—go to this man's wife, and if she confesses, stone her. So he went to her, and she confessed, and he stoned her.
