✧ I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was sitting in the shade of a doum palm, and with him was a scribe of his, dictating to him. He said: “Shall I not write you down, O Ibn Hawala?” I said: “I do not know what God and His Messenger have chosen for me.” So he turned away from me. Ismaʿil said once in the first instance: “We shall write you down, O Ibn Hawala?” I said: “I do not know in what, O Messenger of God?” So he turned away from me, and bent over his scribe, dictating to him. Then he said: “Shall we write you down, O Ibn Hawala?” I said: “I do not know what God and His Messenger have chosen for me.” So he turned away from me, and bent over his scribe, dictating to him. He said: Then I looked, and behold, in the writing was ʿUmar. So I said: “ʿUmar is only written down for good.” Then he said: “Shall we write you down, O Ibn Hawala?” I said: “Yes.” Then he said: “O Ibn Hawala, how will you act in a trial that will emerge in the ends of the earth, as if it were the horns of cattle?” I said: “I do not know what God and His Messenger have chosen for me.” He said: “And how will you act in another that will emerge after it, as if the first one in it were the leap of a rabbit?” I said: “I do not know what God and His Messenger have chosen for me.” He said: “Follow this one.” He said: And a man was turning his back at that moment. He said: So I went off, and I hastened, and took hold of his shoulders, and turned his face toward the Messenger of God ﷺ, and I said: “This one?” He said: “Yes.” He said: And behold, it was ʿUthman b. ʿAffan ؓ.
