✧ We were with him on a journey, and he hastened the pace when he turned back, and he used to do that because of the scarcity of provisions. A speaker said to him: O Messenger of God, the people have fallen behind you. So he halted, and the people halted with him until they had all gathered to him. Then he said to them: Would you like us to have a short sleep?—or a speaker said to him—so he dismounted and they dismounted. Then he said: Who will guard us tonight? I said: I, may God make me your ransom. He gave me the nose-rein of his she-camel and said: Here, take it; be not negligent. He said: So I took the nose-rein of the she-camel of the Messenger of God ﷺ and the nose-rein of my own she-camel, and I withdrew not far away and let them loose to graze. While I was watching them, sleep overtook me, and I was unaware of anything until I felt the heat of the sun on my face. I woke up and looked right and left, and there were the two riding camels not far from me. I took the nose-rein of the Prophet's she-camel ﷺ and the nose-rein of my own she-camel, and I went to the nearest of the people and woke him and said to him: Have you prayed? He said: No. Then the people woke one another until the Prophet ﷺ woke up. He said: O Bilal, is there water in the mi’dah—meaning the leather water bag? He said: Yes, may God make me your ransom. So he brought him water for ablution, and he performed ablution but did not rub off the dust from it with water. Then he ordered Bilal, and he gave the call to prayer. Then the Prophet ﷺ stood and prayed the two rak’ahs before dawn without hurrying. Then he ordered him, and he gave the iqamah, and he prayed without hurrying. Then a speaker said to him: O Prophet of God, have we been negligent? He said: No, God, Mighty and Majestic, took away our souls and has returned them to us, and we have prayed.
