✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at al-Ḥudaybiyyah at the base of the tree which Allah, Exalted is He, mentioned in the Qur’an, and from the branches of that tree something would fall onto the back of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib and Suhayl b. ʿAmr were before him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to ʿAlī ؓ: Write: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Suhayl b. ʿAmr took hold of his hand and said: We do not know the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Write in our treaty what we know. He said: Write: In Your name, O Allah. So he wrote: This is what Muḥammad, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, has made peace upon with the people of Makkah. Suhayl b. ʿAmr grabbed his hand and said: We have wronged you if you are His Messenger. Write in our treaty what we know. So he said: Write: This is what Muḥammad b. ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib has made peace upon, and I am the Messenger of Allah. So he wrote. While we were thus, thirty young men bearing weapons came out against us and charged at our faces. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ supplicated against them, and Allah, Mighty and Majestic, seized their sight, so we went to them and took them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Have you come under anyone’s covenant, or has anyone given you protection? They said: No. So he released them. Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, sent down: And it is He who restrained their hands from you and your hands from them in the valley of Makkah after He had given you victory over them, and Allah is ever Seeing of what you do.
