✧ My father heard me saying, “In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful,” and he said: “O my son, beware” – he said: “I have not seen anyone among the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ who was more hateful to him than any innovation in Islam than him” – “for I have prayed with the Messenger of God ﷺ, and with Abu Bakr, and Umar, and with Uthman, and I have not heard any of them say it. So do not say it when you recite; rather say: ‘Praise be to God, Lord of the worlds.’”

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Abū Zakariyyā Yaḥyá b. Sharaf al-Nawawī

machine translationThe memorizers (ḥuffāẓ) declared this hadith weak (ḍaʿīf) and objected to al-Tirmidhī's grading it fair (ḥasan), such as Ibn Khuzaymah, Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr and al-Khaṭīb. They said that its transmission revolves around Ibn ʿAbdullāh b. Mughaffal, who is unknown (majhūl).

    in مسند أحمد, p. 16991
  • al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī

machine translationA hadith that is explicit about not reciting the basmalah aloud. Even if it is not among the categories of the sound (ṣaḥīḥ), it does not fall below the rank of fair (ḥasan).

    in مسند أحمد, p. 16991
  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

machine translationThis is a hadith that only Abū Nuʿāmah Qays b. ʿUbāyah transmitted alone. Abū Nuʿāmah and Ibn ʿAbdullāh b. Mughaffal were not relied upon by the two authors of the Ṣaḥīḥ collections.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 16991
  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationAl-Thawrī narrates it from Khālid, from Abū Nuʿāmah, from Anas. Khalaf b. Sālim said likewise from Yaḥyā b. Ādam, from al-Thawrī. But the companions of Yaḥyā b. Ādam opposed him and said in it: from Abū Qilābah, from Anas. ʿAbdullāh b. al-Walīd al-ʿAdanī and ʿUbaydullāh al-Ashjaʿī narrated it from al-Thawrī, from Khālid, from Abū Nuʿāmah, from Anas. Muʿāwiyah b. Hishām said from al-Thawrī, from Khālid, from Bakr al-Muzanī, from Abū Qilābah, from Anas, and he erred in mentioning Bakr. ʿAbdullāh b. Maymūn al-Kūfī narrated it from Khālid, from Abū Nuʿāmah, from Anas. Al-Jurayrī, ʿUthmān b. Ghiyāth and Rāshid al-Ḥimmānī narrated this hadith from Abū Nuʿāmah, whose name is Qays b. ʿUbāyah, from Ibn ʿAbdullāh b. Mughaffal, from his father, and this is closer to the correct version.
