✧ Umar b. al-Khattab heard the voice of Ibn al-Mughtarif—or Ibn al-Gharif—the camel-driver singing in the depth of the night while we were traveling to Makkah. Umar urged his mount on until he joined the group, and there he was with Abd al-Rahman. When dawn broke, Umar said: 'Now it is dawn; be quiet now. Dawn has broken; remember God.' Then he noticed that Abd al-Rahman was wearing two leather socks. He said: 'Two leather socks?' He replied: 'I wore them with one better than you, or with the Messenger of God ﷺ.' Umar said: 'I adjure you to take them off, for I fear that people will look at you and follow your example.'
