حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ

أَنَّ عُمَرَ حَمَلَ عَلَى فَرَسٍ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ [عَزَّ وَجَلَّ]، فَرَآهَا، أَوْ بَعْضَ نِتَاجِهَا يُبَاعُ، فَأَرَادَ شِرَاءَهُ، فَسَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ عَنْهُ فَقَالَ: اتْرُكْهَا تُوَافِكَ، أَوْ تَلْقَهَا جَمِيعًا، وَقَالَ: مَرَّتَيْنِ، فَنَهَاهُ وَقَالَ: لَا تَشْتَرِهِ، وَلَا تَعُدْ فِي صَدَقَتِكَ.

Translation

✧ Umar donated a horse in the cause of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and then he saw it—or some of its offspring—being sold. He wanted to buy it, so he asked the Prophet ﷺ about it. He said: Leave it, it will bring you reward and you will meet it all together. He said this twice, and forbade him, saying: Do not buy it, and do not take back your charity.
