✧ We went out with the Prophet ﷺ to Khaybar. A man from the people said: 'O ʿAmir, if only you would let us hear some of your camel-driving songs.' He said: So he dismounted and began chanting to them, saying: 'By God, were it not for God, we would not have been guided,' and he mentioned poetry other than this, but I did not memorize it. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Who is this driver?' They said: 'ʿAmir b. al-Akwaʿ.' He said: 'May God have mercy on him.' A man from the people said: 'O Prophet of God, would that you had let us enjoy him.' When the people lined up for battle and fought them, ʿAmir b. al-Akwaʿ was struck by the hilt of his own sword and died. When evening came, they lit a great fire. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'What is this fire? For what are you lighting it?' They said: 'For domestic donkeys.' He said: 'Pour out what is in them and break them.' A man said: 'Should we not pour out what is in them and wash them?' He said: 'Or that.'
