✧ ʿĀmir was a poet, and he dismounted to chant, saying: 'O Allah, had it not been for You, we would not have been guided, nor given charity, nor prayed. So forgive—ransom for You—what we have brought, and make firm our feet when we meet the enemy, and cast tranquility upon us. Indeed, when the call is sounded, we come; and by the call they relied upon us.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Who is this chanter?' They said: 'Ibn al-Akwaʿ.' He said: 'May Allah have mercy on him.' A man said: 'It has become obligatory, O Messenger of Allah; if only you had let us enjoy him longer.' He said: Then he was struck; he went to strike a Jewish man, and the tip of the sword hit the eye of his knee. The people said: 'His deeds are in vain; he killed himself.' He said: I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ after he had arrived in Madinah, while he was in the mosque, and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, they claim that ʿĀmir's deeds are in vain.' He said: 'And who says that?' He said: I said: 'Men from the Ansar, among them so-and-so and so-and-so.' He said: 'Whoever says that has lied. Indeed, for him are two rewards'—and he indicated with his two fingers—'and he is indeed a striving mujāhid. Rare is an Arab who walked with it and surpassed him.'
