✧ My father arrived from Syria as a delegate, and I was with him. We met Mahmud b. al-Rabi', and he related a hadith to my father from 'Itban b. Malik. My father said, "My son, memorize this hadith, for it is among the treasures of hadith." When we returned, we went to Madinah and asked about him, and there he was, still alive—an old, blind man. He said: We asked him about the hadith, and he said: Yes. My eyesight went during the time of the Messenger of God ﷺ. I said, "O Messenger of God, my eyesight has gone, and I cannot pray behind you. If only you would designate a place in my house as a mosque and pray in it, so I could take it as a place of prayer." He said, "Yes, for I will come to you tomorrow." He said: When he prayed the next day, he turned to him and went until he came to him. He said, "O 'Itban, where would you like me to designate for you?" He described a place for him, so he designated it and prayed in it. Then he was detained or sat down, and word reached the Ansar around us, so they came until the house was filled with us. They mentioned the hypocrites and the harm and evil they received from them, until they referred their affair to a man among them called Malik b. al-Dukhshum, and they spoke of his condition and his condition, while the Messenger of God ﷺ remained silent. When they spoke at length, the Messenger of God ﷺ said, "Does he not testify that there is no god but God?" When it came to the third time, they said, "Indeed he says it." He said, "By the One who sent me with the truth, if he says it sincerely from his heart, the Fire will never consume him." He said: They never rejoiced at anything as much as they rejoiced at what he said.
