✧ I came to Abū Wāʾil in the mosque of his people to ask him about those people whom ʿAlī killed at al-Nahrawān: why they answered him, why they parted from him, and why he deemed fighting them lawful. He said: We were at Ṣiffīn. When the killing became intense among the people of Syria, they took refuge on a hill. ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ said to Muʿāwiya: Send to ʿAlī a muṣḥaf and call him to the Book of God, for he will not refuse you. A man brought it and said: Between us and you is the Book of God: Have you not seen those who were given a portion of the Book, being called to the Book of God that it might judge between them, then a party of them turns away? ʿAlī said: Yes, I am more entitled to that; between us and you is the Book of God. He said: The Khawārij came to him, while we called them that day the Qurrāʾ, with their swords on their shoulders, and said: O Commander of the Faithful, what are we waiting for with these people on the hill? Shall we not march against them with our swords until God judges between us and them? Sahl b. Ḥunayf spoke and said: O people, be suspicious of your own selves, for I saw us on the day of al-Ḥudaybiya, meaning the truce that was between the Messenger of God ﷺ and the polytheists. If we had seen fighting, we would have fought. ʿUmar came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: O Messenger of God, are we not upon truth and they upon falsehood? Are not our slain in Paradise and their slain in the Fire? He said: Yes. He said: Then why do we accept humiliation in our religion and return, before God has judged between us and them? He said: O Ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, I am the Messenger of God, and He will never forsake me. He said: He went back angry, and he could not endure until he came to Abū Bakr and said: O Abū Bakr, are we not upon truth and they upon falsehood? Are not our slain in Paradise and their slain in the Fire? He said: Yes. He said: Then why do we accept humiliation in our religion and return, before God has judged between us and them? He said: O Ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, he is the Messenger of God, and He will never forsake him. He said: Then Sūrat al-Fatḥ was revealed. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ sent me to ʿUmar and I recited it to him. He said: O Messenger of God, is it a victory? He said: Yes.
