✧ Indeed a man was given choice by his Lord, Mighty and Majestic, between living in the world as long as he wished to live in it, eating from the world as much as he wished to eat from it, and meeting his Lord, Mighty and Majestic — and he chose meeting his Lord. He said: So Abū Bakr wept. He said: The companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Do you not wonder at this old man? The Messenger of God ﷺ mentioned a righteous man whom his Lord, Blessed and Exalted, gave choice between the world and meeting his Lord, Blessed and Exalted, and he chose meeting his Lord, Mighty and Majestic?!” And Abū Bakr was the most knowledgeable of them about what the Messenger of God ﷺ had said. Abū Bakr said: “Rather, may we ransom you with our wealth and our sons, or with our fathers!” The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “There is no one among the people who has been more gracious to us in his companionship and his wealth than Ibn Abī Quḥāfah. If I were to take a bosom friend (khalīl), I would have taken Ibn Abī Quḥāfah, but it is affection and brotherhood of faith — but it is affection and brotherhood of faith — he said it twice — and indeed your companion is the bosom friend of God, Mighty and Majestic.”
