حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَوْفٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي حَيَّانُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي قَطَنُ بْنُ قَبِيصَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَبِيصَةَ بْنِ مُخَارِقٍ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ

الْعِيَافَةُ وَالطِّيَرَةُ وَالطَّرْقُ مِنَ الْجِبْتِ. قَالَ: الْعِيَافَةُ مِنَ الزَّجْرِ، وَالطَّرْقُ مِنَ الْخَطِّ.

✧ Augury (al-ʿiyāfah), bird omens (al-ṭiyarah), and drawing lines (al-ṭarq) are from al-jibt (idolatry). He said: al-ʿiyāfah is from scaring birds away, and al-ṭarq is from line drawing.
