حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ عَنِ الْمِسْوَرِ بْنِ مَخْرَمَةَ أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ قَالَ
سَمِعْتُ هِشَامَ بْنَ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ يَقْرَأُ سُورَةَ الْفُرْقَانِ، فَقَرَأَ فِيهَا حُرُوفًا لَمْ يَكُنْ نَبِيُّ اللهِ [ ﷺ ] أَقْرَأَنِيهَا، قَالَ: فَأَرَدْتُ أَنْ أُسَاوِرَهُ، وَأَنَا فِي الصَّلَاةِ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ قُلْتُ: مَنْ أَقْرَأَكَ هَذِهِ الْقِرَاءَةَ ؟ قَالَ: رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، قُلْتُ: كَذَبْتَ وَاللهِ، مَا هَكَذَا أَقْرَأَكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، فَأَخَذْتُ بِيَدِهِ أَقُودُهُ، فَانْطَلَقْتُ بِهِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّكَ أَقْرَأْتَنِي سُورَةَ الْفُرْقَانِ، وَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ هَذَا يَقْرَأُ فِيهَا حُرُوفًا لَمْ تَكُنْ أَقْرَأْتَنِيهَا، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: اقْرَأْ يَا هِشَامُ، فَقَرَأَ كَمَا كَانَ قَرَأَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: هَكَذَا أُنْزِلَتْ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: اقْرَأْ يَا عُمَرُ، فَقَرَأْتُ، فَقَالَ: هَكَذَا أُنْزِلَتْ، ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: إِنَّ الْقُرْآنَ أُنْزِلَ عَلَى سَبْعَةِ أَحْرُفٍ.

✧ I heard Hisham b. Hakim b. Hizam reciting Surat al-Furqan, and he recited in it some letters which the Prophet of Allah ﷺ had not taught me. He said: I wanted to seize him while I was in prayer, but when he finished, I said: Who taught you this recitation? He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I said: You have lied, by Allah; the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not teach you like this. So I took him by the hand and led him away to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I said: O Messenger of Allah, you taught me Surat al-Furqan, and I heard this one reciting in it some letters which you did not teach me. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Recite, O Hisham. So he recited as he had recited, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Thus it was revealed. Then he said: Recite, O Umar. So I recited, and he said: Thus it was revealed. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The Quran was revealed in seven modes.
