✧ What kept you back? Had you not already made ready your mount? He said: I said: 'O Messenger of God, if I were sitting before anyone else from the people of this world, I would think that I could escape his displeasure with an excuse, for I have been given skill in argument. But by God, I know that if I told you today a lie that you would be pleased with, God would soon make you displeased with me, and if I told you today the truth, you would be angry with me for it, I hope for the delight of my eyes through forgiveness from God, Blessed and Exalted. By God, I had no excuse. By God, I was never stronger or more prosperous than when I stayed behind from you.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'As for this one, he has spoken the truth. Arise until God, Exalted, decides your case.' So I arose, and men of Banū Salimah hurried and followed me. They said to me: 'By God, we did not know you had committed any sin before this. You were unable to excuse yourself to the Messenger of God ﷺ with what those who stayed behind excused themselves. The Messenger of God's ﷺ seeking forgiveness for you would have sufficed for your sin.' He said: 'By God, they kept rebuking me until I wanted to go back and give the lie to myself.' He said: 'Then I said to them: Has anyone met with this along with me?' They said: 'Yes, two men met it with you, who said what you said, and it was said to them the like of what was said to you.' He said: 'I said to them: Who are they?' They said: 'Murārah b. al-Rabīʿ al-ʿĀmirī and Hilāl b. Umayyah al-Wāqifī.' He said: 'They mentioned to me two righteous men who had witnessed Badr, in whom I had a good example.' He said: 'So I went on when they mentioned them to me.' He said: 'The Messenger of God ﷺ forbade the Muslims from speaking to us, the three, from among those who stayed behind from him. So the people avoided us.' He said: 'They changed towards us until the earth became unrecognizable to me in my own eyes, not the earth I used to know. We remained in that state for fifty nights. As for my two companions, they submitted and stayed in their houses weeping. As for me, I was the youngest and most resilient of the people. I would attend prayer with the Muslims and roam the markets, but no one would speak to me. I would come to the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was in his gathering after prayer and greet him, and say to myself: Did he move his lips to return the greeting or not? Then I would pray near him and steal glances at him. When I turned to my prayer, he would look at me; when I turned towards him, he would turn away. Until when that prolonged from the Muslims' boycotting, I walked until I scaled the wall of Abū Qatādah, who was my cousin and the most beloved of people to me. I greeted him, and by God, he did not return my greeting. I said to him: 'O Abū Qatādah, I adjure you by God, do you know that I love God and His Messenger?' He said: 'He remained silent.' He said: 'I repeated the adjuration, and he remained silent. I repeated the adjuration, and he said: God and His Messenger know best!' My eyes overflowed, and I turned away until I scaled the wall. While I was walking in the market of Madinah, a Nabataean from the Nabataeans of al-Shām, one of those who had brought food to sell in Madinah, said: 'Who can direct me to Kaʿb b. Mālik?' He said: 'The people began pointing him to me until he came and handed me a letter from the king of Ghassān, for I was a scribe. In it was: 'To proceed: We have heard that your companion has treated you harshly, and God has not placed you in an abode of humiliation or ruin. Join us and we will console you.' He said: 'When I read it, I said: This too is from the trial!' He said: 'I took it to the oven and kindled the oven with it.' Until when forty nights of the fifty had passed, a messenger from the Messenger of God ﷺ came to me and said: 'The Messenger of God ﷺ commands you to withdraw from your wife.' He said: 'I said: Should I divorce her, or what should I do?' He said: 'Rather, withdraw from her, and do not approach her.' He said: 'He sent the like of that to my two companions.' He said: 'I said to my wife: Join your family and stay with them until God decides this matter.' He said: 'The wife of Hilāl b. Umayyah came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: O Messenger of God, Hilāl is a helpless old man with no servant. Would you dislike that I serve him?' He said: 'No, but he must not approach you.' She said: 'By God, he has no inclination towards anything. By God, he has not stopped weeping from the time your matter occurred until this day of his.' He said: 'Some of my family said to me: If only you would seek permission of the Messenger of God ﷺ concerning your wife, for he permitted the wife of Hilāl b. Umayyah to serve him.' He said: 'I said: By God, I will not seek permission concerning her from the Messenger of God ﷺ, and I do not know what the Messenger of God ﷺ would say if I sought permission, for I am a young man.' He said: 'We remained after that ten nights, completing fifty nights since he forbade speaking to us.' He said: 'Then I prayed the dawn prayer on the morning of the fiftieth night on a roof of one of our houses. While I was sitting in the condition God, Blessed and Exalted, mentioned of us, my soul constrained and the earth constrained despite its vastness, I heard a crier on top of Mount Salʿ saying at the top of his voice: O Kaʿb b. Mālik, rejoice!' He said: 'I fell down in prostration, and I knew that relief had come. The Messenger of God ﷺ had announced at dawn prayer that God, Blessed and Exalted, had accepted our repentance, so people went to give us glad tidings. Some went to my two companions to give glad tidings, and a man galloped a horse to me, and a runner from Aslam hurried, and the one on the mountain topped it. The voice was swifter than the horse. When the one whose voice I had heard came to me with glad tidings, I took off my two garments and gave them to him for his good news. By God, I owned nothing else that day. I borrowed two garments and put them on, and set off making my way to the Messenger of God ﷺ. People met me in groups, congratulating me on the repentance, saying: May God's repentance to you be pleasing! Until I entered the mosque, and there was the Messenger of God ﷺ sitting in the mosque with people around him. Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbayd Allāh stood up to me, hurrying until he shook my hand and congratulated me. By God, no man from the Emigrants stood up to me other than him.' He said: 'Kaʿb never forgot it of Ṭalḥah.' Kaʿb said: 'When I greeted the Messenger of God ﷺ, he said while his face was radiant with joy: Rejoice in the best day that has passed over you since your mother gave birth to you!' He said: 'I said: From you, O Messenger of God, or from God?' He said: 'No, rather from God.' He said: 'When the Messenger of God ﷺ was pleased, his face would shine as if it were a piece of the moon, until that was recognizable from him.' He said: 'When I sat before him, I said: O Messenger of God, part of my repentance is that I divest myself of my wealth as charity to God, Exalted, and to His Messenger. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: Keep some of your wealth, for it is better for you.' He said: 'I said: Then I will keep my share at Khaybar.' He said: 'I said: O Messenger of God, God, Exalted, saved me only through truthfulness, and part of my repentance is that I will never speak anything but truth as long as I live.' He said: 'By God, I do not know anyone among the Muslims whom God has tested with truthfulness in speech since I said that to the Messenger of God ﷺ better than what God, Blessed and Exalted, has tested me with. By God, I have not deliberately uttered a lie since I said that to the Messenger of God ﷺ to this day of mine, and I hope that He will preserve me in what remains.' He said: 'God, Blessed and Exalted, revealed: God has turned in mercy to the Prophet and the Emigrants and the Helpers who followed him in the hour of hardship, after the hearts of a party of them had almost swerved; then He turned to them in mercy; indeed He is to them Kind, Merciful. And to the three who were left behind, until, when the earth became straitened for them despite its vastness, and their own souls became straitened for them, and they were certain that there is no refuge from God except in Him; then He turned to them in mercy, that they might repent; indeed God is the Oft-Returning, Merciful. O you who believe, fear God and be with the truthful.' Kaʿb said: 'By God, God, Blessed and Exalted, has not bestowed on me any blessing after He guided me that is greater in my own eyes than my truthfulness to the Messenger of God ﷺ on that day, that I did not lie to him and thus perish as those who lied to him perished when they lied to him. Indeed, God, Blessed and Exalted, said concerning those who lied to him when they lied, the worst thing said to anyone. God, Exalted, said: They will swear by God to you when you return to them, that you may turn away from them. So turn away from them; indeed they are filth, and their abode is Hell, as a recompense for what they used to earn. They swear to you so that you may be pleased with them. But even if you are pleased with them, God is not pleased with the defiantly disobedient people.' He said: 'We three were left behind, apart from the affair of those from whom the Messenger of God ﷺ accepted when they swore oaths, for he pledged allegiance to them and sought forgiveness for them. The Messenger of God ﷺ deferred our affair until God, Exalted, decided. Thus God, Exalted, said: And to the three who were left behind. His leaving us behind and deferring our affair, which He mentioned, is not about our being left behind by staying away from the raid; rather, it is about those who swore to him and excused themselves to him, and he accepted from them.'
