حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ زَيْدٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ

أَنَّ الضَّحَّاكَ بْنَ قَيْسٍ كَتَبَ إِلَى قَيْسِ بْنِ الْهَيْثَمِ حِينَ مَاتَ يَزِيدُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ: سَلَامٌ عَلَيْكَ، أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: إِنَّ بَيْنَ يَدَيِ السَّاعَةِ فِتَنًا كَقِطَعِ اللَّيْلِ الْمُظْلِمِ، فِتَنًا كَقِطَعِ الدُّخَانِ، يَمُوتُ فِيهَا قَلْبُ الرَّجُلِ كَمَا يَمُوتُ بَدَنُهُ، يُصْبِحُ الرَّجُلُ مُؤْمِنًا وَيُمْسِي كَافِرًا، وَيُمْسِي مُؤْمِنًا وَيُصْبِحُ كَافِرًا، يَبِيعُ أَقْوَامٌ خَلَاقَهُمْ وَدِينَهُمْ بِعَرَضٍ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا. وَإِنَّ يَزِيدَ بْنَ مُعَاوِيَةَ قَدْ مَاتَ، وَأَنْتُمْ إِخْوَانُنَا وَأَشِقَّاؤُنَا، فَلَا تَسْبِقُونَا حَتَّى نَخْتَارَ لِأَنْفُسِنَا

Translation

✧ That al-Dahhak b. Qays wrote to Qays b. al-Haytham when Yazid b. Mu'awiya died: 'Peace be upon you. To proceed: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Before the Hour there will be trials like patches of dark night, trials like patches of smoke, in which a man's heart dies as his body dies. A man will be a believer in the morning and a disbeliever in the evening, and a believer in the evening and a disbeliever in the morning. People will sell their character and their religion for a portion of this world." Yazid b. Mu'awiya has died, and you are our brothers and our equals, so do not overtake us until we choose for ourselves.'
