✧ This verse was revealed while the Messenger of God ﷺ was hiding in Makkah: “Do not recite [the Qur’an] loudly in your prayer or [too] quietly.” He said: When he prayed with his companions, he raised his voice with the Qur’an. He said: When the polytheists heard that, they reviled the Qur’an, its sender, and the one who brought it. So God, Mighty and Majestic, said to His Prophet ﷺ: “Do not recite loudly in your prayer,” that is, in your recitation, lest the polytheists hear and revile the Qur’an, “and do not recite too quietly” from your companions, so that you do not make them hear the Qur’an, until they take it from you, “and seek a way between that.”
