✧ I fell ill in Makkah in the year of the conquest with a severe illness, and I was on the verge of death. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to visit me. I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have much wealth, and no one will inherit from me except my daughter. Should I give two-thirds of my wealth as charity?' — and Sufyan said once: 'Should I give all my wealth as charity?' He said: 'No.' I said: 'Then a half?' He said: 'No.' I said: 'A third?' He said: 'A third, and a third is a lot. For you to leave your heirs wealthy is better than leaving them poor, begging from people. You will never spend anything seeking thereby the countenance of Allah except that you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel you raise to your wife's mouth.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, will I be left behind after my emigration?' He said: 'You will not be left behind after me such that you do a deed seeking thereby the countenance of Allah except that you will increase in rank and degree. Perhaps you will be left behind until some people benefit through you and others are harmed through you. O Allah, complete the emigration of my companions and do not turn them back on their heels. But the wretched one is Sa'd b. Khawlah.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ grieved for him that he died in Makkah.
