حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ حَوْشَبٍ حَدَّثَنِي إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أُمَيَّةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِعَنْ جَدِّهِ قَالَ

كَانَ لَهُمْ غُلَامٌ يُقَالُ لَهُ طَهْمَانُ أَوْ ذَكْوَانُ فَأَعْتَقَ جَدُّهُ نِصْفَهُ فَجَاءَ الْعَبْدُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: تَعْتِقُ فِي عِتْقِكَ وَتَرِقُّ فِي رِقِّكَ، قَالَ: وَكَانَ يَخْدِمُ سَيِّدَهُ حَتَّى مَاتَ

Translation

✧ They had a slave called Tahman or Dhakwan, and his grandfather freed half of him. The slave came to the Prophet ﷺ, and the Prophet ﷺ said: 'You are free to the extent of your freedom, and you remain a slave to the extent of your slavery.' He said: And he served his master until he died.
