✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ borrowed coats of mail from him on the day of Hunayn. He said: 'Is it by force, O Muhammad?' He replied: 'Rather, it is a loan, guaranteed.' He said: Some of them were lost, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ offered to compensate him for them. He said: 'Today, O Messenger of Allah, I am more desirous of Islam.'

machine translationSo we found that Abū al-Aḥwaṣ was inconsistent (muḍṭarib) in the chain of transmission of this hadith, with this inconsistency: at one time he made it from some people of the family of Ṣafwān, and at another from Ṣafwān himself. Both of his narrations of it were from ʿAṭāʾ b. Abī Rabāḥ, not from Ibn Abī Mulaykah. In this he contradicted Sharīk and Isrāʾīl in the chain of this hadith. And in neither of his two narrations is there any mention of a guarantee of liability that he stipulated to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concerning those coats of mail he had lent him.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 15462
