✧ I said to Jabir b. Abdullah, and Jabir b. Abdullah said: "O son of my brother, I am the most knowledgeable of people about this hadith. I was among those who stoned the man, meaning Ma'iz. When we stoned him and he felt the touch of the stones, he said: 'O people, send me back to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for my people have killed me and deceived me about myself, and they said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ will not kill you.' He said: So we did not stop from the man until we finished with him. He said: When we returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we mentioned his words to him, and he said: 'Why did you not leave the man and bring him to me? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ only wanted to verify his matter.'"
