✧ When we faced the valley of Hunayn, he said: We descended into a valley among the valleys of Tihamah, a deep hollow, a steep descent; we were only descending into it rapidly. He said: In the darkness of dawn, the people had lain in ambush for us in its ravines, its sides, and its narrow passes; they had gathered, prepared, and made ready. He said: By Allah, nothing startled us while we were descending except the squadrons charging at us with the charge of a single man, and the people fled back in retreat. They kept going, not one of them turning to another. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ moved aside to the right, then said: "To me, O people! Come to me, I am the Messenger of Allah, I am Muhammad b. Abdullah." He said: But nothing—the camels bore one another away, and the people went off, except that with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was a small band of the Muhajirun, the Ansar, and his household, not many. Among those who stood firm with him ﷺ were Abu Bakr and Umar, and from his household Ali b. Abi Talib, al-Abbas b. Abd al-Muttalib, his son al-Fadl b. Abbas, Abu Sufyan b. al-Harith, Rabi'ah b. al-Harith, Ayman b. Ubayd, who was the son of Umm Ayman, and Usamah b. Zayd. He said: And a man from Hawazin on a red camel of his, in his hand a black banner of his on the head of a long spear, ahead of the people, with Hawazin behind him; whenever he caught up, he thrust with his spear, and whenever the people eluded him, he raised it for those behind him, and they followed him.
