✧ The Prophet ﷺ entered upon him to visit him while he was ill in Makkah. I said, "O Messenger of God, should I bequeath all of my wealth?" He said, "No." I said, "Then half?" He said, "No." I said, "Then a third?" He said, "A third, and a third is large—or: much. If you leave your heirs rich, it is better than leaving them poor, begging from people. Whatever you spend on your family of any expense, you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel you raise to your wife's mouth." He said: He had only a daughter at that time. Sa'd mentioned the emigration, and he said, "May God have mercy on Ibn 'Afra'. Perhaps God will raise you so that some people benefit from you and others are harmed by you."

machine translationAl-Zuhrī narrates it, and it is sound (ṣaḥīḥ) from him. Saʿd b. Ibrāhīm also narrated it, and there is disagreement about him concerning it: al-Thawrī narrated it from Saʿd, from ʿĀmir b. Saʿd, from his father; and Misʿar said, from Saʿd: "Some of the family of Saʿd narrated to me, from Saʿd." And it is sound (ṣaḥīḥ) from ʿĀmir b. Saʿd, from his father, through the narration of al-Zuhrī and through the narration of Saʿd b. Ibrāhīm.
