حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى وَحَسَنٌ وَاللَّفْظُ لَفْظُ حَسَنٍ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الزُّبَيْرِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ جَابِرًا هَلْ
سَأَلْتُ جَابِرًا هَلْ سَمِعْتَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ: الرَّجُلُ فِي صَلَاةٍ مَا انْتَظَرَ الصَّلَاةَ؟ قَالَ: انْتَظَرْنَا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ لَيْلَةً لِصَلَاةِ الْعَتَمَةِ فَاحْتَبَسَ عَلَيْنَا حَتَّى كَانَ قَرِيبًا مِنْ شَطْرِ اللَّيْلِ أَوْ بَلَغَ ذَلِكَ، ثُمَّ جَاءَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَصَلَّيْنَا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: اجْلِسُوا فَخَطَبَنَا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: إِنَّ النَّاسَ قَدْ صَلَّوْا وَرَقَدُوا، وَأَنْتُمْ لَمْ تَزَالُوا فِي صَلَاةٍ مَا انْتَظَرْتُمُ الصَّلَاةَ.

✧ I asked Jabir: Did you hear the Prophet ﷺ say: A man is in prayer as long as he waits for the prayer? He said: We waited for the Prophet ﷺ one night for the night prayer, and he delayed until it was close to half the night or reached that. Then the Prophet ﷺ came and we prayed. Then he said: Sit down. He addressed us, and the Prophet ﷺ said: The people have prayed and slept, but you have not ceased to be in prayer as long as you wait for the prayer.
