✧ We set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the expedition of Dhat al-Riqa'. A woman from the polytheists was killed (by us). When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned back and returned, her husband, who had been absent, came and swore that he would not stop until he had shed blood among the companions of Muhammad ﷺ. He set out following the trail of the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ stopped at a place and said, "Who is a man who will guard us tonight?" A man from the Muhajirun and a man from the Ansar volunteered and said, "We will, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Be at the mouth of the mountain pass." They had camped at a pass in the valley. When the two men went out to the mouth of the pass, the Ansari said to the Muhajir, "Which part of the night would you prefer me to take over for you, its beginning or its end?" He said, "Take over its beginning for me." So the Muhajir lay down and slept, while the Ansari stood praying. The man came, and when he saw the figure of the Ansari, he knew it was the lookout of the people, so he shot an arrow at him and hit him with it. He pulled it out, put it aside, and remained standing. Then he shot another arrow at him and hit him with it. He pulled it out, put it aside, and remained standing. Then he did it a third time, hit him with it, and he pulled it out and put it aside. Then he bowed and prostrated. Then he woke his companion, saying, "Sit up, for we have been attacked." He jumped up. When the man saw them both, he knew they had been alerted, so he fled. When the Muhajir saw the blood on the Ansari, he said, "Glory be to Allah! Why did you not wake me?" He said, "I was in a surah that I was reciting, and I did not like to cut it off until I completed it. When the shooting continued, I bowed, and then I alerted you. By Allah, had I not feared neglecting the post that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded me to guard, my soul would have departed before I cut it off or completed it."
