✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ stayed for ten years following the pilgrims in their encampments during the season, and at Majanna, and at ʿUkaz, and their encampments in Mina, saying: 'Who will shelter me? Who will support me so that I may convey the messages of my Lord [Mighty and Majestic], and for him will be Paradise?' But he would not find anyone to support him and shelter him, until a man would travel from Mudar, or from Yemen, or a relative of his, and his people would come to him and say: 'Beware of the young man of Quraysh, lest he tempt you.' And he would walk among their saddles, calling them to God, Mighty and Majestic, while they pointed at him with their fingers. Until God, Mighty and Majestic, sent us to him from Yathrib. Then a man would come to him, believe in him, and he would teach him the Quran. Then he would return to his family, and they would become Muslims through his Islam. Until there did not remain a house among the houses of Yathrib except that in it was a group of Muslims openly professing Islam. Then God [Mighty and Majestic] sent us, and we conspired and gathered, seventy men from us, and we said: 'Until when will we leave the Messenger of God ﷺ to be driven away in the mountains of Makkah and to live in fear?' So we set out until we came to him in the season, and we promised to meet him at the mountain pass of al-ʿAqaba. His uncle al-ʿAbbas said: 'O son of my brother, I do not know who these people are who have come to you. I have knowledge of the people of Yathrib.' So we gathered with him, from one man and two men. When al-ʿAbbas looked at our faces, he said: 'These are people I do not recognize. These are young men.' So we said: 'O Messenger of God, upon what shall we pledge allegiance to you?' He said: 'You pledge allegiance to me upon hearing and obedience in activity and in inactivity, upon spending in hardship and in ease, upon commanding what is right and forbidding what is wrong, and upon speaking for God without being taken by the blame of any blamer. And upon supporting me when I come to Yathrib, so that you protect me from what you protect yourselves, your wives, and your sons from. And for you is Paradise.' So we rose to pledge allegiance to him. Asʿad b. Zurara took hold of his hand, and he was the youngest of the seventy, and said: 'Wait, O people of Yathrib. We have not struck the livers of the camels to come to him except that we know that he is the Messenger of God. His expulsion today means separation from all the Arabs, the killing of your best ones, and that swords will bite you. So if you are a people who will be patient with the swords when they touch you, and with the killing of your best ones, and with separation from all the Arabs, then take him, and your reward is upon God [Mighty and Majestic]. But if you are a people who fear for yourselves out of fear, then leave him, for that is more excusable before God.' They said: 'O Asʿad b. Zurara, remove your hand from us, for by God, we will not abandon this pledge nor seek to annul it.' So we rose to him, man by man, and he took the pledge from us according to the condition of al-ʿAbbas, and gave us Paradise for that.
