✧ Jibril came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: Stand and pray. So he prayed Zuhr when the sun had declined. Then he came to him for Asr and said: Stand and pray. So he prayed Asr when the shadow of everything became equal to its length - or he said: when his shadow became equal to his length. Then he came to him for Maghrib and said: Stand and pray. So he prayed when the sun had set. Then he came to him for Isha and said: Stand and pray. So he prayed when the twilight had disappeared. Then he came to him for Fajr and said: Stand and pray. So he prayed when dawn broke - or he said: when dawn shone. Then he came to him the next day for Zuhr and said: Stand and pray. So he prayed Zuhr when the shadow of everything became equal to its length. Then he came to him for Asr and said: Stand and pray. So he prayed Asr when the shadow of everything became twice its length. Then he came to him for Maghrib at the same time as before, not differing from it. Then he came to him for Isha when half the night had passed - or he said: a third of the night - and he prayed Isha. Then he came to him for Fajr when it was very bright and said: Stand and pray. So he prayed Fajr. Then he said: The time is between these two.

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • al-Bukhari

machine translationThe most authentic thing on the prayer times is the hadith of Jābir.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 14693
  • Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal

machine translationAs for al-Ḥusayn, he is the brother of Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad b. ʿAlī, and his hadith that is narrated on the prayer times is not rejected (munkar), because others agreed with him on some of its features.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 14693
  • Aḥmad ibn Shuʿayb al-Nasāʾī

machine translationHe declared it sound (ṣaḥḥaḥahu).

    in مسند أحمد, p. 14693
  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

    machine translationConnected (muttaṣil), good (ḥasan).

    in مسند أحمد, p. 14693

  • Ishbīlī

machine translationHe remained silent about it, deeming it authentic (ṣaḥīḥ).

    in مسند أحمد, p. 14693
  • Ibn al-Qaṭṭān

machine translationIt must be a mursal report, because Jābir did not mention who narrated it to him, and he did not witness that on the morning after the Night Journey, since it is known that he was one of the Anṣār who only accompanied the Prophet in Medina.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 14693
