✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ stayed in Makkah for ten years, following people in their dwellings at Ukaz, Majanna, and in the seasons at Mina, saying: Who will shelter me? Who will help me, so that I may convey the message of my Lord, and for him is Paradise? Until a man would come out from Yemen or from Egypt—thus he said—and his people would come to him and say: Beware of the youth of Quraysh, lest he tempt you. And he would walk among their camps while they pointed at him with fingers, until God sent us to him from Yathrib. We sheltered him and believed him. A man from us would go out, believe in him, and he would teach him the Quran. He would return to his family, and they would become Muslim because of his Islam, until there remained no house among the houses of the Ansar but that it had a group of Muslims openly professing Islam. Then they all conspired together, and we said: Until when shall we leave the Messenger of God ﷺ to be driven away in the mountains of Makkah, and to fear? Seventy men from us traveled to him, until they came to him in the season. We appointed with him the mountain pass of al-Aqaba. We gathered with him one or two men at a time, until we all met. We said: O Messenger of God, upon what shall we pledge allegiance to you? He said: You pledge allegiance to me upon hearing and obedience in activity and in laziness, and upon spending in hardship and in ease, and upon commanding the right and forbidding the wrong, and that you speak concerning God and do not fear the blame of any blamer concerning God, and that you help me and protect me when I come to you from what you protect yourselves, your wives, and your children from. And for you is Paradise. He said: So we stood up to him and pledged allegiance to him. As'ad b. Zurara took hold of his hand, and he was one of the youngest of them, and said: Gently, O people of Yathrib, for we have not struck the livers of camels except that we know he is the Messenger of God ﷺ, and that his expulsion today means separation from all the Arabs, the killing of your best ones, and that the swords will bite you. So either you are people who will bear that patiently, and your reward is upon God, or you are people who fear for yourselves out of cowardice, so make that clear, for it is a better excuse for you before God. They said: Put aside from us, O As'ad, for by God, we will never abandon this pledge ever, and we will never revoke it ever. He said: So we stood up to him and pledged allegiance to him. He took from us and stipulated, and gives us for that Paradise.
