Translation

✧ We came to Jabir b. 'Abdullah while he was among the Banu Salimah, and we asked him about the farewell pilgrimage of the Prophet ﷺ. He told us that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed in Madinah for nine years without performing Hajj. Then it was announced among the people that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would perform Hajj that year. He said: Many people came down to Madinah, all of them seeking to follow the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and do as he did. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out when ten days remained of Dhu al-Qa'dah, and we set out with him. When he reached Dhu al-Hulayfah, Asma' bt. 'Umays gave birth to Muhammad b. Abi Bakr. She sent to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asking: 'What should I do?' He said: 'Take a bath, then wrap yourself with a cloth, then enter ihram.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out, and when his she-camel stood him upright on al-Bayda', he entered ihram with the declaration of tawhid: 'Labbayk, O Allah, labbayk. Labbayk, You have no partner, labbayk. Indeed praise and blessing are Yours, and the dominion. You have no partner.' And the people began the talbiyah, and the people were adding: 'Dha al-ma'arij [Possessor of the Ascending Stairways]' and similar words, while the Prophet ﷺ listened and did not say anything to them. I looked as far as my eyes could see, and in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were riders and walkers, and behind him the like of that, and to his right the like of that, and to his left the like of that. Jabir said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was among us, and upon him the Qur'an was being sent down, and he knew its interpretation, and whatever he did, we did.' We set out intending nothing but Hajj, until we came to the Ka'bah. The Prophet of Allah ﷺ touched the Black Stone, then he walked briskly (ramal) for three rounds and walked normally for four, until when he finished he went to the Station of Ibrahim and prayed two rak'ahs behind it. Then he recited: 'And take the Station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer.' My father said: Abu 'Abdullah—meaning Ja'far—said: In them he recited the chapter of Tawhid and 'Say: O disbelievers.' Then he touched the Stone and went out to al-Safa. Then he recited: 'Indeed al-Safa and al-Marwah are among the rites of Allah.' Then he said: 'We begin with what Allah began with.' He ascended al-Safa until he saw the House, then he said the takbir and said: 'There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is capable of all things. There is no god but Allah. He fulfilled His promise, aided His servant, and defeated the confederates alone.' Then he supplicated, then he returned to this speech, then he descended. When his feet reached the bottom of the valley he walked briskly, and when he ascended he walked normally, until he came to al-Marwah and ascended it. When he saw the House, he said upon it as he had said upon al-Safa. When it was the seventh time at al-Marwah, he said: 'O people, if I had known before what I came to know after, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal, and I would have made it an 'Umrah. So whoever among you does not have a sacrificial animal, let him exit ihram and make it an 'Umrah.' So all the people exited ihram. Suraqah b. Malik b. Ju'shum, who was at the bottom of al-Marwah, said: 'O Messenger of Allah, is this for this year of ours or forever?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ interlaced his fingers and said: 'Forever, forever, forever.' Then he said: 'The 'Umrah has entered into the Hajj until the Day of Resurrection.' He said: 'Ali had arrived from Yemen with a sacrificial animal, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had brought a sacrificial animal with him from Madinah. Fatimah ؓ had exited ihram, worn dyed clothes, and applied kohl. 'Ali ؓ disapproved of that for her, so she said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded me to do it.' He said: 'Ali said in Kufah—Ja'far said: My father said: Jabir did not mention this part—so I went, perturbed, to ask the Prophet ﷺ about what Fatimah mentioned. I said: 'Fatimah has worn dyed clothes and applied kohl, and she said: My father commanded me to do it.' He said: 'She spoke the truth, she spoke the truth, she spoke the truth. I commanded her to do it.' Jabir said: 'And he said to 'Ali: With what did you enter ihram?' He said: 'I said: O Allah, I enter ihram with what Your Messenger entered ihram with.' He said: 'And I have the sacrificial animal with me.' He said: 'Then do not exit ihram.' He said: 'The total number of sacrificial animals that 'Ali brought from Yemen and that the Prophet ﷺ brought was one hundred. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ slaughtered sixty-three with his own hand, then he gave them to 'Ali and he slaughtered the rest, and he included him in his sacrificial animal. Then he ordered that a piece be taken from every camel, and they were put in a pot, and they ate from its meat and drank from its broth.' Then the Prophet of Allah ﷺ said: 'I have slaughtered here, and all of Mina is a place of slaughter.' He stood at 'Arafah and said: 'I have stood here, and all of 'Arafah is a place of standing.' He stood at al-Muzdalifah and said: 'I have stood here, and all of al-Muzdalifah is a place of standing.'
