حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ عَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ

مَا مِنْ ذَكَرٍ، وَلَا أُنْثَى إِلَّا وَعَلَى رَأْسِهِ جَرِيرٌ مَعْقُودٌ ثَلَاثَ عُقَدٍ حِينَ يَرْقُدُ، فَإِنِ اسْتَيْقَظَ فَذَكَرَ اللهَ [تَعَالَى]، انْحَلَّتْ عُقْدَةٌ، فَإِذَا قَامَ فَتَوَضَّأَ، انْحَلَّتْ عُقْدَةٌ، فَإِذَا قَامَ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ، انْحَلَّتْ عُقَدُهُ كُلُّهَا.

Translation

✧ There is no male or female except that upon his head is a rope tied with three knots when he sleeps. If he wakes and remembers Allah [the Exalted], one knot is untied. Then when he gets up and performs ablution, one knot is untied. Then when he gets up to pray, all his knots are untied.
