حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ عَنْ حُصَيْنٍ عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ

وُلِدَ لِرَجُلٍ مِنَّا غُلَامٌ، فَسَمَّاهُ الْقَاسِمَ، فَقُلْنَا: لَا نَكْنِيكَ بِهِ حَتَّى نَسْأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ، فَذَكَرْنَا لَهُ، فَقَالَ: تَسَمَّوْا بِاسْمِي، وَلَا تَكْتَنُوا بِكُنْيَتِي، فَإِنَّمَا بُعِثْتُ قَاسِمًا بَيْنَكُمْ.

✧ A son was born to a man among us, and he named him al-Qasim. We said: "We will not call you by that kunya until we ask the Prophet ﷺ." So we mentioned it to him, and he said: "Name yourselves with my name, but do not use my kunya, for I have been sent as a divider (Qasim) among you."
