حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ وَحَجَّاجٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي شُعْبَةُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ قَتَادَةَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لِأُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ: قَالَ حَجَّاجٌ: حِينَ أُنْزِلَتْ لَمْ يَكُنِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا، وَقَالَا جَمِيعًا: إِنَّ اللهَ [عَزَّ وَجَلَّ] أَمَرَنِي أَنْ أَقْرَأَ عَلَيْكَ لَمْ يَكُنِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا، قَالَ: وَقَدْ سَمَّانِي؟! قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: فَبَكَى

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Ubayy b. Ka'b—Hajjaj said: when 'Lam yakun' (Surah al-Bayyinah) was revealed—and both said: Allah (Mighty and Majestic) commanded me to recite to you 'Lam yakunilladhina kafaru.' He said: And He named me?! He said: Yes. He said: Then he wept.
