✧ That ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf came to Madinah, and the Messenger of God ﷺ established brotherhood between him and Saʿd b. al-Rabīʿ al-Anṣārī. Saʿd said to him: 'My brother, I am the wealthiest of the people of Madinah, so look at half of my wealth and take it. And I have two wives, so look at whichever of them pleases you, and I will divorce her.' ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said: 'May God bless you in your family and your wealth. Show me the market.' So they showed him the market, and he went and bought and sold and made a profit. Then he came with some aqiṭ and ghee. Then he stayed as long as God willed, and he came with a trace of saffron on him. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Mahyam?' He said: 'O Messenger of God, I have married a woman.' He said: 'What did you give her as a dowry?' He said: 'A gold nugget's weight.' He said: 'Hold a wedding feast, even with a sheep.' ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said: 'Indeed I saw myself such that if I lifted a stone, I would hope to find gold or silver.'
