حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ بَكْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا حُمَيْدٌ عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ

مَا كُنَّا نَشَاءُ أَنْ نَرَى رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ مُصَلِّيًا إِلَّا رَأَيْنَاهُ، أَوْ نَائِمًا إِلَّا رَأَيْنَاهُ، قَالَ: وَكَانَ يَصُومُ مِنَ الشَّهْرِ حَتَّى نَقُولَ: لَا نَرَاهُ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يُفْطِرَ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا، وَيُفْطِرُ مِنَ الشَّهْرِ حَتَّى نَقُولَ: لَا نَرَاهُ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَصُومَ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا

Translation

✧ We did not wish to see the Messenger of God ﷺ praying except that we saw him, or sleeping except that we saw him. He said: He would fast during the month until we said: 'We do not see him intending to break his fast at all.' And he would not fast during the month until we said: 'We do not see him intending to fast at all.'
