حَدَّثَنَا سُوَيْدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الْكَلْبِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا أَبَانُ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ
بَيْنَمَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَاعِدًا فِي أَصْحَابِهِ إِذْ مَرَّ بِهِمْ يَهُودِيٌّ فَسَلَّمَ، فَلَمَّا مَضَى دَعَاهُ، فَقَالَ: كَيْفَ قُلْتَ ؟ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: سَامٌ عَلَيْكُمْ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: إِذَا سَلَّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ، فَقُولُوا: وَعَلَيْكُمْ، أَيْ مَا قُلْتُمْ
Translation

✧ While the Messenger of God ﷺ was sitting among his companions, a Jew passed by them and greeted them. When he had gone on, he called him and said: How did you say? He said: I said 'Sām ʿalaykum.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: When one of the People of the Book greets you, say: 'Wa ʿalaykum,' meaning, whatever you said.
