✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ consulted the people about the captives on the day of Badr. He said: "Allah [Mighty and Majestic] has given you power over them." He said: Umar b. al-Khattab stood and said: "O Messenger of Allah, strike their necks." He said: The Prophet ﷺ turned away from him. He said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ repeated: "O people, Allah has given you power over them, and they are only your brothers from yesterday." He said: Umar stood and said: "O Messenger of Allah, strike their necks." He said: The Prophet ﷺ turned away from him. He said: Then the Prophet ﷺ repeated the like of that to the people. Abu Bakr [al-Siddiq] stood and said: "O Messenger of Allah, we think you should pardon them and accept ransom from them." He said: Then the gloom that was on the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ departed. He said: So he pardoned them and accepted ransom from them. He said: And Allah [Mighty and Majestic] revealed about it: Had it not been for a prior decree from Allah, a grievous punishment would have touched you for what you took.
