✧ A woman who had committed adultery was brought to Umar b. al-Khattab, and he ordered that she be stoned. They went with her to stone her, but Ali met them and said: "What is this?" They said: "She committed adultery, and Umar ordered her stoned." Ali snatched her from their hands and sent them back. They returned to Umar, who said: "What made you come back?" They said: "Ali sent us back." He said: "Ali would not do this except for something he knows." He sent for Ali, and he came looking like one angered. He said: "Why did you send these people back?" He said: "Did you not hear the Prophet ﷺ say: 'The pen is lifted from three: from the sleeper until he wakes, from the child until he grows up, and from the afflicted until he regains his senses'?" He said: "Yes." Ali said: "This woman is an afflicted one of Banu so-and-so. Perhaps he came to her while she was in that state." Umar said: "I do not know." He said: "And I do not know." So he did not stone her.

in مسند أحمد, p. 1335 - Ibn Daqīq al-ʿĪd
