حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزٌ وَعَفَّانُ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ أَخْبَرَنَا قَتَادَةُ عَنْ أَنَسٍ

أَنَّ يَهُودِيًّا مَرَّ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَأَصْحَابِهِ، فَقَالَ: السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ. فَرَدَّ عَلَيْهِ أَصْحَابُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ. فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: إِنَّمَا قَالَ: السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ، فَأُخِذَ الْيَهُودِيُّ فَجِيءَ بِهِ فَاعْتَرَفَ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: رُدُّوا عَلَيْهِمْ مَا قَالُوا

Translation

✧ A Jew passed by the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions and said, "Al-sam 'alaykum (death be upon you)." The Companions of the Prophet ﷺ responded to him. The Prophet ﷺ said, "He only said, 'al-sam 'alaykum.'" So the Jew was seized and brought, and he confessed. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Return to them what they said."
