حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ سُفْيَانَ قَالَ

خَطَبَ رَجُلٌ يَوْمَ الْبَصْرَةِ حِينَ ظَهَرَ عَلِيٌّ، فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ: هَذَا الْخَطِيبُ الشَّحْشَحُ، سَبَقَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، وَصَلَّى أَبُو بَكْرٍ، وَثَلَّثَ عُمَرُ، ثُمَّ خَبَطَتْنَا فِتْنَةٌ بَعْدَهُمْ، يَصْنَعُ اللهُ فِيهَا مَا شَاءَ

Translation

  3. al-Aswad b. Qays
  4. ʿAmr b. Sufyān

A man gave a speech when ‘Ali ؓ prevailed on the day of Basrah, and ‘Ali said: This speaker does not know what he is talking about. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came first, Abu Bakr came second and ʿUmar came third. Then we got involved in turmoil after they were gone, and Allah will judge concerning it as He wills.
