✧ He witnessed Anas b. Malik say: Al-'Ala' b. Ziyad al-'Adawi asked: "O Abu Hamzah, at the age of which man was the Prophet of God ﷺ when he was sent?" He said: "At forty years of age." He said: "Then what happened?" He said: "Then he was in Makkah for ten years and in Madinah for ten years, so he completed sixty years, and then God, Mighty and Majestic, took him to Himself." He asked: "At the age of which man was he then?" He said: "Like the most youthful of men, the most handsome, the most beautiful, and the most full-bodied." He said: "O Abu Hamzah, did you fight alongside the Prophet of God ﷺ?" He said: "Yes, I fought with him on the day of Hunayn. The polytheists came out in great numbers and charged at us until we saw our own cavalry behind our backs. Among the polytheists was a man who charged at us, striking us down and crushing us. When the Prophet of God ﷺ saw that, he dismounted, and God [Mighty and Majestic] routed them, so they turned their backs. The Prophet of God ﷺ stood when he saw the victory, and they began to be brought to him as captives, one by one, and they pledged allegiance to him upon Islam. A man from the Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'I have made a vow, that if the man who has been crushing us since today is brought, I will strike his neck.' He said: 'The Prophet of God ﷺ remained silent, and the man was brought. When he saw the Prophet of God ﷺ, he said: "O Prophet of God, I repent to God! O Prophet of God, I repent to God!" He said: 'The Prophet of God ﷺ withheld, and did not accept his allegiance, so that the other man might fulfill his vow.' He said: 'The man began looking at the Prophet ﷺ, expecting him to order his execution, but he also feared to kill him in the presence of the Prophet of God ﷺ. When the Prophet of God ﷺ saw that he was not doing anything, he accepted his allegiance. The man said: "O Prophet of God, what about my vow?" He said: "I have not withheld from him since today except so that you might fulfill your vow." The man said: "O Prophet of God, could you not have signaled to me?" He said: "It is not for a prophet to signal."
