✧ Three men from among those before you set out seeking provision for their families, and rain caught them, so they entered a cave, and a rock fell over its entrance, closing it so tightly that they could not see even a crevice in it. They said to one another: 'The rock has fallen and the trace is obliterated, and none knows of your place except Allah. So call upon Allah by the most trustworthy of your deeds.' One of them said: 'O Allah, if You know that I had two aged parents, and I used to milk for them in their vessel and bring it to them, and if I found them sleeping, I would stand over their heads, disliking to disturb their sleep by bringing them their evening drink, until they awoke whenever they awoke. O Allah, if You know that I did that only in hope of Your mercy and fear of Your punishment, then relieve us.' The rock moved by a third. The second said: 'O Allah, if You know that I hired a laborer for a job he was to do, and he came to me seeking his wages while I was angry, and I rebuked him, so he left and abandoned his wages. I gathered it and invested it until from it came all kinds of wealth, then he came to me seeking his wages, and I gave him all of it. Had I wished, I would not have given him except his original wages. O Allah, if You know that I did that only in hope of Your mercy and fear of Your punishment, then relieve us.' The rock moved by two-thirds. The third said: 'O Allah, if You know that a woman attracted me, and I offered her a payment. When I had power over her, I protected her honor and gave her the payment. O Allah, if You know that I did that only in hope of Your mercy and fear of Your punishment, then relieve us.' The rock moved away, and they came out elated, walking together. Thus in the edition of Jamʿiyyat al-Makniz al-Islāmī, and in the edition of Muʾassasat al-Risālah there is an addition: 'qad.'
