حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى وَأَبُو نُعَيْمٍ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ وَقَالَ أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ

جَلَدَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فِي الْخَمْرِ بِالْجَرِيدِ وَالنِّعَالِ، وَجَلَدَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ - قَالَ يَحْيَى فِي حَدِيثِهِ: أَرْبَعِينَ - فَلَمَّا كَانَ عُمَرُ، وَدَنَا النَّاسُ مِنَ الرِّيفِ وَالْقُرَى، قَالَ لِأَصْحَابِهِ: مَا تَرَوْنَ ؟ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ: اجْعَلْهَا كَأَخَفِّ الْحُدُودِ، فَجَلَدَ عُمَرُ ثَمَانِينَ

Translation

✧ The Prophet ﷺ flogged for wine with palm branches and sandals, and Abu Bakr flogged - Yahya said in his hadith: forty. When it was 'Umar and the people drew near to the countryside and villages, he said to his companions: What do you think? 'Abd al-Rahman said: Make it like the lightest of the legal punishments. So 'Umar flogged eighty.
