✧ We were with Ali, and whenever he witnessed a scene, or overlooked a hill, or descended into a valley, he said: 'Glory be to God; God and His Messenger have spoken the truth.' I said to a man from Banu Yashkur: 'Let us go to the Commander of the Believers so that we may ask him about his saying "God and His Messenger have spoken the truth."' He said: So we went to him and said: 'O Commander of the Believers, we saw that whenever you witnessed a scene, or descended into a valley, or overlooked a hill, you said: "God and His Messenger have spoken the truth." Did the Messenger of God entrust you with something in that regard?' He said: He turned away from us, and we persisted with him. When he saw that, he said: 'By God, the Messenger of God ﷺ did not entrust me with anything except what he entrusted to the people. But the people fell upon Uthman and killed him, and others were in a worse state and action regarding it than I. Then I thought that I was the most entitled of them to this matter, so I undertook it. God knows best whether we were right or wrong.'
